“Abstinence Not Curbing Teen Sex”

November 7, 2007 on 11:33 pm | In What A Country | 2 Comments

One of the biggest cultural/concept shocks I’ve experienced since I’ve been in the US has been the idea of Abstinence programs as prevention of unwanted pregnancies in teenagers. I clearly remember being stunned during a lecture in Environmental Science class when the instructor went over some of the most effective ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy and she noted Abstinence in the top 3. When she asked the question and I skimmed through the different methods on the projected screen I thought that abstinence was there for the purpose of “non-of-the-above confusion;” it didn’t even cross my mind that it was there as a real method. I remember going home and getting a quick and helpful overview of the school system and abstinence from Joan. We discussed, at length, the insanity of providing illiteracy at school and how instead of educating kids these abstinence-only programs bring misinformation only.

A few years later I was redeemed. I was riding the elevator today and was staring at the little news screen – I love this thing – and what was I to see?!?! A News heading saying: Abstinence Not Curbing Teen Sex – “…Programs that focus exclusively on abstinence have not been shown to affect teenager sexual behavior…” You can click on the heading above to access the full article.

This report makes me so happy. I’m glad that this insane and ridiculous idea is being examined and discredited!!! I hope that the people involved can be pinpointed and held responsible for implementing it and for the millions of tax dollars wasted.
