The Big Apple Way…

There was an amazing terrace where the inhabitants can enjoy the pleasure of being outside, next to a fountain and this was the view from it:

Claudio and I went to visit his friend Mark who lives on Wall Street. The building has a laps pool in the basement, along with a sauna, steam room, rocket ball court, and a bowling alley. On the picture bellow is the chandelier in the lobby of the builiding.

Manhattan Sightseeing - Midtown

September 28, 2007 on 1:59 pm | In A Quickie | 3 Comments

Beccam suggested, now that i live near NYC, to blog about some of the sightseeing spots in Manhattan. I really liked the idea and decided to come up with an abridged list of places to visit and admire in Manhattan. Kate is coming to visit me, the week of my birthday, and I’m planning to put my itinerary to the test. Since it is going to be just a weekend visit I concentrated on Mid- and- Downtown with their neighborhoods.
Here is the Midtown part:

Midtown West

    Carnegie Hall – 57th St & 7th Ave

Time Square – 42nd to 47th St between Broadway and 7th Ave.

Theater District – 53rd to 42nd St, between 6th and 8th Ave – the Great White way.

Penn Station – 7th Ave and 32nd St

Madison Square Garden (MSG) – on top of Penn Station

Macy’s and Manhattan Mall – 34th St and Broadway

Midtown East

Rockefeller Center – 5th Ave, between 50th and 51st St.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral – Madison Ave., between 50th and 51st.

Grant Central Station - E 42nd Street at Park Avenue.

Chrysler Building - 405 Lexington Avenue at 42nd Street.

Empire State Building - 5th Avenue at 34th Street.

Gym Etiquette

September 13, 2007 on 10:50 pm | In Fitness & Nurtition | 1 Comment

Don’t you wish that people were a little bit more considerate at the gym? I don’t want to give recipes about how to make the world a better place but I want to share my frustration with how careless people are. Lets face it we are all short on time and nerves.

A little side note: I get up at 7:30am, go to work, I leave work around 6:30, then go to the gym and get home around 9:00pm. By the time I cook my dinner and lunch for next day and eat, it’s about 10:00pm. That leaves me only a couple of hours to check my email, respond to friends, do some day-to-day-life research, read some news and blogs. I don’t even watch TV. I never turned the cable on. There are simply not enough hours in the day!!!

I also use to love going to the gym in the last few months of last year and while unemployed but now, like everybody else, I go because I have to and I wish I didn’t have to. Hence, it would be best if it is a quick and painless experience.

Dos and Don’ts at the Gym

Dos

    1. Do use a towel on the equipment it’s better than leaving oily spots from your hair and sweaty spots from the rest of your exposed body parts.
    2. Do keep an eye on the surrounding people; everybody needs a spot now and then without knowing.
    3. Do ask for a spot. It is not shameful.
    4. Do keep in mind that if somebody asked you for a spot they most likely need help with more than 1 set. Be courteous and be alert don’t ignore them.
    5. Do wipe down cardio equipment after use.
    6. Do, ALWAYS, restack the used weights back on the racks!!!
    7. Do help to deal with the knuckleheads – call them on the spot if you see them leaving their weights around and rearrange the weights when you take yours off; it’s not going to kill you.

Don’ts

    1. DON’T SPIT IN THE WATER FOUNTAIN! Use the bathroom or the trash can!
    2. Don’t exercise immediately in front of the dumbbell rack. Take the dumbbells/barbell weights and step aside so that everybody else can access them.
    3. Don’t sit on the equipment between sets. Step away from the equipment when you break so that people can alternate with you.
    4. Don’t just say how many sets you have left and sit on the machine; offer to work in.
    5. Don’t drop the weights on the floor; it’s dangerous and it creates unnecessary noise.
    6. Don’t slam the locker doors uncontrollably; it’s is annoying.
    7. Don’t leave your towel. Put it in the towel drop bin after you are finished.

A Cancer Survivor

September 6, 2007 on 11:52 pm | In Food for Thought, Friends | No Comments

About 6 months ago my dear friend Rebecca Faulconer (Beccam) invited me to dinner under the pretext that she had something serious to share with me. It was the fact that she had breast cancer!

You always hear breast cancer, breast cancer but it is different when it’s someone close to you. I was speechless and for days couldn’t think of anything else; this terrible fact kept popping in my mind. The worst part was that I didn’t know how to react to the situation. Beccam has been very tough and has kept most upbeat attitude but only she knows the pain, fears, struggle and sleepless nights it had cost her. She shared most of her experience so far on her blog - “Girl on the Loose” – where you can read on the details.

She recently lost her job and is stuck with some serious medical bills. My appeal is to reach out and help. There is an easy, secure, and legitimate way to do this – just go to her blog and click the chip-in button on the right hand sidebar. She is only trying to raise $300 for her medical bills.
