Fancy Cereal vs. Store Brand
March 31, 2006 on 9:40 am | In Food for Thought | 2 CommentsAfter 7 years of following the “Fit for life” book of Harvey and Marilyn Diamond (18 – 25 of my life) and 4 of them being complete vegan (no meat, eggs, milk, cheeses etc.) I went back to the MEAT.
It has been 4 years since I’m mixing the proteins with the carbohydrates again. Certain things have stuck with me however – I still have hard time with breakfast. I’m still eating my fruit in the morning. For the longest time I wasn’t eating anything in the morning but the last few months I’ve learned to do a bowl of cereal with a banana, almost every morning. Thus the cereal is crucial. The question is how do you pick a cereal? When you go to the supermarket there are well over 50 different kinds. Well, I personally search for the one with the least carbs and sugar and with the most fiber. Interestingly, the answer rests with the Stop & Shop brands. I’ve compared the S&S nutrition facts to the boxes that state “healthy choice,” the South Beach ones but nothing can beat the generic S&S brand. The only cereal that has similar carb and sugar content is the Special K but here comes the price factor; Special K can’t beat S&S in this category. I love a cereal that has only 23g of carbs, 4g of sugars, and 3g of dietary fiber per serving, which translates into 150 calories with milk.
Are generic brands to be overlooked because they are “generic” and in an uglier packaging?
Soup Do Jour

I’m taking 3 classes as I have previously mentioned and I’m also done now. I don’t know if you’d remember but I was talking about a project that we were doing on The Black Dog. Next week is the presentation; we are going to present our findings to the CEO and CFO of the company in one of their locations. For final preparations our group met at 2:30pm at the school cafeteria and we worked there till 6:00.
Naturally, I got hungry and I figured since I’m in the cafeteria I should get some chili, I always eat the chili at the cafeteria. I always do because it’s tasty and it’s never watery. Well, this time it was extra thick. We separate the garbage at school – biological, disposable and plastic go in different bins. Speaking of which, the spoon and forks are made of something that resembles plastic but it’s not and are environmentally safe but fragile. As I was saying the chili was extra thick yesterday – it had chunks of ground meat the size of a walnut. While I was trying to break one of them lumps of meat my “green peace” spoon broke which made everyone laugh. I asked them if they know what the special of the cafeteria was today and answered - it’s the chili, it’s “Carnivore Chunk” so thick you can break a spoon. We laughed so hard that we continued repeating it all through out the entire class.
Memories of Last Summer
March 22, 2006 on 10:45 pm | In You've got voicemail! | No CommentsI just found this old phone message from Meglena and it reminded me of last summer and all the fun I had over 4th of July weekend. Unfortunately it’s not really translatable so it is only for my Bulgarian audience. To hear it CLICK HERE .
Baba Marta and the Baby
March 16, 2006 on 7:45 am | In Friends | No CommentsI visited Didi and the baby last Monday. I had to deliver “Martenitzi” that my mom had sent via Zakki. The last few times I was there I didn’t dare hold the baby because she was still so little but this time I held her and Didi even left her with me while she went to pick up her step son. I also took some pictures:
Summary of NYC
March 15, 2006 on 10:29 am | In A Quickie | No CommentsOf course there was a lot more to it but here are the highlights of my last trip to NYC:
- I was able to relax for 4.5 days – no rush for anything
- I ate continental breakfast every morning at the hotel – I ate more bacon in 4 days than in my entire life.
- The best part – I got to hang out with my best friend from Bulgaria – Zakki
- We saw 2 Broadway shows – “Mama Mia” and “Chicago”
- Attended Jose’s birthday party
- Walked around the city and did some shopping

Post NYC Depression
March 8, 2006 on 9:30 pm | In A Quickie | 1 CommentI came back from a short vacation and I’m completely demotivated and depressed. The visit in NYC was utterly outstanding and fun but it’s now over. I don’t feel like writing… I’m even taking a break from going to the gym and I’m having pizza tonight. I feel tired, overwhelmed and everything takes a lot of effort so I’m planning on trying to lay low for a week.
